Members of the SICon research group published an article in the journal “Building”, in the issue “Eco-Friendly Building Materials”.

The article “Sustainable Structural Lightweight Concrete with Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Waste Aggregate” is available as an article submitted to the journal in 2024.

The article addresses the use of recycled plastic waste as aggregates in lightweight concrete, an alternative to reducing the environmental impact of plastic, which has high decomposition and occupies large volumes in landfills. The study presents the manufacture and evaluation of lightweight concrete using recycled plastic aggregates, especially PET. The research showed that, although PET aggregates have irregular shapes and influence workability, the concrete produced has a low density (around 1200 kg/m³) and compressive strength of up to 17.6 MPa. The use of these plastic waste contributes to sustainability, offering a viable and efficient solution for waste management.
