Article of the SICon Research Group with the participation of researchers from the group RECICLOS, UFLA and BAM is published in the journal “Construction and Building Materials”.

The article is titled: “Influence of particle size-designed recycled mineral admixtures on the properties of cement-based composites” and is featured in volume 272 of construction and building materials magazine 2021.

The authors of the article are: José Maria Franco de Carvalho, Keoma Defáveri, Júlia Castro Mendes, Wolfram Schmidt, Hans-Carsten Kühne, Ricardo André Fiorotti Peixoto. The group is composed of researchers from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), The Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM- Germany).

In this work, engineered recycled mineral admixtures were obtained from four different industrial residues: basic oxygen furnace slag, iron ore tailings, quartz mining tailings and quartzite mining tailings. The grinding performance was evaluated in two different programs and the characterization included chemical and mineralogical composition, particle morphology, and physical properties. Performance evaluations were carried out in blended pastes and mortars, including flow properties, hydration kinetics, soundness, pozzolanic activity, and compressive strength.
