This paper provides a brief discussion about the activators traditionally used, and a review of existing literature about alternative activators, produced from agricultural or industrial wastes. The focus of this work is the discussion – from environmental, technical and technological points of view – about conventional and alternative activators, highlighting their main effects in the alkali-activation process, final properties and applicability potencial.
